http://www.annefrank.org/en/Subsites/Home/ Watch the video "Behind the Secret Entrance" and comment. 50-100 words What is your initial reaction to this video?
My initial reaction to this video was that this was crazy and horrible. Jews had their rights to enjoy life taken away from them and they couldn't do anything about it. I can't imagine being cooped up for months on end with the same people, unable to talk or walk through the outside world. I think that if I had been in Anne's situation I would have gone insane.
My initial reaction to the video was that everything happened so quickly. The Franks were a normal family living in Holland and suddenly the Germans invaded. The Franks quickly devised a plan where they had to make lots of sacrifices, but it was better than dying. I agree with Kathy in that I would have gone insane in close quarters for so many months. It is still such a shocking and unimaginable story to me.
My initial reaction to the video was that everything happened suddenly, but the Franks were prepared. When they first heard of the Nazis and what they were doing they moved the Netherlands. There they started a successful business. By doing this, they made allies but also they got money that they could use for supplies. When the Nazis did come they immediately got into hiding, in a place that they arranged beforehand. The Nazis were cruel, but the Franks were well prepared.
I also think that they were well prepared. It is a good thing that they thought so quickly and thoroughly about how they were going to escape. It is also a good thing that they made the right allies.
My initial reaction to this video was, o m g. Being stuck in a secret annex for about 2 years would have been miserable. The Franks had so many restrictions, and had to be completely silent for the entire day while in the annex. If I were in Anne's place at that time, I would have been terrified. I would probably go wicked claustrophobic and freak out. I guess it is better than being tortured in a concentration camp, but it's still very horrible.
My initial reaction to this video was that the Nazis were invading the Netherlands and all the Jews would have to either move out of the country or even get killed. The Franks then went into hiding immediately. They had to put up with each other. I would never be able to be cooped up in a small room with other people and having to be quiet all during the day. When the people in the annex had to get supplies they had to use the Black Market so that the Nazis wouldn't find them.
I like that you added the part about their restrictions. Being stuck there would be hard enough, but the restrictions that came along with hiding made it even more unimaginable. Having to be silent and not being able to go to the bathroom or move at certain times would be really hard. But I guess if it was a matter of life or death you would have to.
My first initial reaction was that this horrible occurrence is happening so quickly. The Franks were living a normal, day to day life, and when the Germans invaded that all changed. I could never see myself being in this situation. And I couldn't put up with people also in a 75 square meter "house" also. Anne Frank must of been a very strong girl. She had to hide all their feelings, and only express them in her diary. Germans are cruel people and I don't know how people could of lived in this time.
Katherine, I agree with you that most people would go insane in those conditions, even though the Franks were prepared. The space that they were in was extremely small and I don't get how they didn't go insane! How could two families and one extra live in such a small space for several months? But, it is better than going to a concentration camp.
@Anna I agree with your comment, in that they had to quickly get out of their house and into hiding as soon as ever possible. It was very cramped corners in the annex, but I also agree, it was better than dying in the concentration camp. It really was very unimaginable story
My reaction to this video is that it's just summarizing what we have been reading. It basically just gives us an image of everything. Now, when we read Anne Frank again, we will know where they live and what kinds of clothes they wear, etc. The pictures of the Nazis beating Jews on the street was upsetting that they would be able to get away with doing that. The reaction of the Franks to the summons of Margot to a labor camp was good because they had already started preparing to go into hiding. It was good to see what the whole situation looked like.
My initial reaction to this video was that the pictures of the annex did not look like what I imagined. I also pictured the city differently. To me, the Franks were lucky to have such a good place to hide in. The annex was a little small but they had running water, electricity, heat, radio, and people that brought them close, and food. The video also made me see how fast the Germans came into the city and made restrictions.
My first reaction was that the the events happened really quickly. It seemed like life was very normal and good until the Nazis came. Once they came they put up so many restrictions that life the same way was impossible. If they tried to continue life the way they had before, they would probably be arrested and worst. I think no one could be prepared for what was about to happen and everyone was disoriented when it came.
My initial reaction to this video was that everything happened so quick. The nazis came and made it so the frank's had so many restrictions but they had a plan for what to do. They then went to a secret antic and hid there. That was my initial reaction.
The video was very informative yet also sad. It was very sad in that it described how day and night they had to live with each other in a 75 square foot house. They had to be quiet all the time and they couldn't go outside. Anyone would have trouble living with the same people for 24 hours. On the other hand, if they wanted to live they would have to do this. Multiple people moved into their house later and got even more crowded. They were very lucky that they didn't get caught.
My initial reaction was just staring at the computer. I was astonished. How could Anne, a 13 YEAR OLD GIRL, stay confined in a small space with so many people for two years?? She was stuck in an annex with her family, who normally take the brunt of adolescent fury anyway, and still be able to sustain any semblance of a relationship? Even though it seems as though Anne's relationship with her mother is crumbling, I applaud her. Sometimes, even when not in a confined space for extended periods of time, it is hard to upkeep a good relationship with your family. As a fellow teenage girl, I can relate; I usually take out my anger on my mother. I can't even begin to imagine living with her 24/7 for two years without anyone else for me to vent. Anyways, back to the point. She is living with her family for TWO YEARS straight, _A_N_D_ sharing a room with a crotchety old man. After one week I would have slept in the closet. Okay, maybe not the closet but ANYWHERE else. This girl had patience, will, and an incredibly positive spirit in the face of adversity. The world would be a very different place if she had made it out of the annex.
My initial reaction to this video is shock. I cannot believe that hitler and his army got away with everything that they showed in the video. The video was informative but also very sad because of how much the jews were being bossed around. When they talked about the annex and how they had to stay in a room with certain privelages revoked it is like evil parents grounding there kid for no good reson. If I were in that annex and had to stay in a small room with other people I think I would go crazy before they got let out in two years.
My initial reaction to the video was speculation of the Nazi war tactics. I don't really have the right to say this, since I wasn't the one in their shoes, but it seemed that the Germans had absolutely nothing to gain from this extravaganza. I still can't understand after all the things we have learned on the Holocaust why the Germans were compelled so easily by Hitler to go after Jews. It seems as though in order to persuade a people like Adolf Hitler did, you would need conclusive evidence to support yourself. This story reminds me somewhat of the situation in North Korea; people somehow convinced that everything their leader says is right and just. It's a disheartening and frustrating piece of history for certain.
@ Chase I also agree that this whole affair seemed frustrating. It seems to me that if someone where to come up with something like anti-semitism today, that person's idea would be squashed flat so fast no one would remember it by tomorrow. But maybe it was because that this had already happened by now, so we know better. It does raise the question that if something as terrible as this were suggested, then wouldn't it be recognized by almost everyone as just that; terrible? The whole idea is frustratingly insane and thoughtless.
My initial reaction to this video was a strong feeling of respect. I felt that Anne and her family did something I could never do in a time that I can't imagine. If I went into hiding I would be crazy after a couple days, I would be begging to run around outside. Yet Anne and her family managed to stay sane cooped up in the annex for two years. They were making the best of such an awful time in history. I also felt a massive amount of frustration when I watched the video. These normal everyday people had everything taken away from them. Even their government said they didn’t have the right to live. It pains me to even think of how it must have been for Anne’s family, yet they lived like this for several years.
